The climate protection plan of Bahnen der Stadt Monheim

The project “KSI: Development of an integrated climate protection plan for Bahnen der Stadt Monheim GmbH – Initial project” is funded under the National Climate Action Initiative (German: Nationale Klimaschutzinitiative, NKI) by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Funding is provided through the Municipal Guideline (German: Kommunalrichtlinie). The project sponsor is Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH.

The project runs from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2028.

Objectives and content

By developing an integrated climate protection plan for the first time, Bahnen der Stadt Monheim (BSM) is creating the foundations for systematically and strategically embedding climate action within the organisation. The plan will serve as a roadmap for the planning and implementation of future climate action activities.

As part of the project, opportunities for reducing and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions will be identified based on an assessment of the current situation, including a greenhouse gas inventory and energy analysis. Building on this, clear climate action targets will be defined and measures developed the for various areas of the company

The involvement of employees and other relevant stakeholders plays an important role in this process. Their experiences and perspectives help to ensure that practical and viable solutions are developed for BSM.

What is the National Climate Action Initiative (NKI)?

Since 2008, the German Federal Government has been using the National Climate Action Initiative to launch and fund numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its programmes and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate action activities ranging from the development of long-term strategies to practical support and investment-based funding measures. This diversity ensures a wealth of good ideas. The National Climate Action Initiative helps to embed climate action at the local level. It benefits consumers as well as businesses, local authorities and educational institutions.
